A jewelry seller sent me PNGs straight from a DSLR. Beautiful. Each was 3–6 MB. Their mobile product page loaded like treacle. Compression wasn't optional — it was revenue.

What to protect

Texture on metal, fabric weave, and skin pores are the first casualties of sloppy compression. Compress once, zoom to 100%, look at edges. If halos appear around the product cutout, back off.

  • Export master TIFF/PNG archived locally
  • Compress a web copy, not your only file
  • Keep filenames versioned: ring-gold-v2-web.jpg

Client-side compression lets you A/B file size visually before upload to Shopify or Etsy. Under 200 KB per gallery image is a reasonable mobile target for catalog thumbs; hero images can be slightly larger.
